Tavronitis Is situated 14 kms. West of Chania. A typical agricultural Greek village. It has all the basic amenities: supermarkets, cafes, tavernas, gymnasium, dry cleaners, gas station, doctors etc. It has a wonderful local ambiance of old Crete yet possesses a modern blessing in the gate to the new National Highway just two minutes from its centre. The beach line is only 200 meters from the heart of Tavronitis and is reached by meandering through a rural idyllic background of lemon and orange groves. On arriving you will reach and expansive cobbled beach. You will see stretched out before you a full panoramic view of the gulf of Chania from the Rodopou peninsula to the west, to the Akrotiri headland to the east. As you turn your back to the turquoise of the ocean you will see a stunning backdrop formed by the majestic White Mountains. These are snowcapped from October to well into the beautiful Cretan springtime and the peak snow only totally melts in high season. To the east side of the village lays the estuary of the Tavronitis River and this is an attraction to ornithologists from all over the world. On any day you can observe a spectacular variety of rare bird life. Tavronitis is a perfect base for visiting all parts of western Crete because it lies at the junction of the old coast road and the Paleochora south coast intersection. |
